Megapixels

The Iowan pages are printed at 300 dpi*. This information shows the capabilities of cameras with different megapixel resolutions. All digital cameras shoot original images at 72 ppi** and must be converted before printing. The Iowan magazine page measures 8.5 x 11, a spread 11 x 17.

To print a full-page photo requires an 8 mp camera, a two-page spread requires a camera with 16–22 mp.

*DPI – dots per inch. In magazine printing the screened dots per inch are 266-300. Anything printed below 266 dpi will appear pixilated.


**PPI – pixels per inch. There are 72 pixels per inch. This is low- or screen-resolution suitable only for screen or online viewing.
