One of the best ways to enjoy Iowa’s great outdoors is to journey along the state’s many recreational trails. In partnership with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, our 2009 guide spotlights twelve Iowa trails — four in each of the state’s three tourism regions. Pick a trail and launch an adventure. We’ve invited organizations and attractions across the state to share ideas for building an Iowa excursion. Combine your trail visit with an exploration of nearby museums, wineries, historic sites, and more.

Information on spotlight trails is provided by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. INHF — a statewide private nonprofit organization working to conserve and promote Iowa’s natural resources — maintains Iowa by Trail, an evolving informational website exploring hard-surfaced Iowa trails that support multiple recreational uses, are at least 3 miles long and 8 feet wide, and have significant portions within natural corridors. Mapping of spotlight trails on page DT-9 was generated by INHF with data provided by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
