Calling Collectors

Kimberly Schilling bought her first antique when she was nine years old, laying out her own money to buy a small nightstand at a farm auction. She had no idea antiques would become her life’s work.

When Schilling was ready to start her family, she knew she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, so she melded her love of antiques with her career experience in management, advertising, and art to found a production company specializing in antiques shows. Now, 17 years later, Melting Pot Productions stages five Antique Spectaculars each year, bringing together vendors and customers who enjoy antiques as much as she does.

“Antiques shows offer something for everyone,” says Schilling, who lives in Council Bluffs. “Collectors come from all walks of life. We have moms with strollers looking for items to decorate their homes. We have people on a mission who make a beeline to specific vendors to find a rare piece to add to their collection.”

Schilling still collects antiques, focusing on jewelry and art pottery. “When you have built-in shopping five times a year at the shows, how could you stop?”

The Quad Cities Antique Spectacular runs November 4–6. The Council Bluffs Antique Spectacular runs November 18–20. For more information, visit
