Art in Context

Painting is just another way of keeping a diary — Pablo Picasso
Picasso’s words highlight the fact that every great artist works within his or her own historical context. That’s a critical element of the Meet the Masters program offered to 5th-graders in the Burlington elementary schools by the Art Guild of Burlington.
The program this school year will cover eight major artists, one each month, including Picasso, Grant Wood, Antoni Gaudi, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Deborah Butterfield. The program offers presentations on the artists’ lives as well as hands-on projects that try to capture each artist’s unique style.
“Our goal is to enrich the students’ education,” notes Lois Rigdon, program coordinator, “by helping them to understand the social and political context in which the artists worked as well as their style and techniques.”
