Potluck: Driving for Art

Eastern Iowa

Compiled by Carol Bodensteiner and Mary Gottschalk

Mississippi River Valley Art Drive

Billie Davids finds interesting stories every place she turns. For years she focused on people stories — stories about people’s dreams, their regrets, their triumphs. More recently, she says, “My stories have become more abstract — about personal growth and human potential.”

Davids, a recent winner of the the Herbert Hoover Artist in Residence Award, tells her stories through her art — fabric designs as well as paintings — rather than in words. She’ll open her home and studio to share her stories-turned-art with art lovers as part of the Mississippi River Valley Art Drive, a self-guided tour of more than 50 artists’ studios and galleries between Dubuque and Galesburg, Illinois.

The Art Drive takes place May 5–6. For details of each location, visit the spring map page at www.mrvad.com. — M.G.
