Iowa’s snowfall and snow cover can be unpredictable. So when conditions are right, Iowans who want outdoor exercise need to be ready to go. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are two sports that let you step out your door and get going.

“These sports are easy to learn, offer really good exercise, and people can do them anywhere,” says Gail Barels, who teaches both sports at the Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Area in Toddville on Saturdays and Sundays in February when the snow is right. Five or six inches of snow are enough for cross-country skiing. Snowshoeing takes even less.
