American Beauty, the 1970 Grateful Dead album that fused rock ’n’ roll, bluegrass, folk, and country, shocked many fans who were expecting the band’s familiar jamming style. Today fusion is itself a classic genre.

Revisit those classic tunes when folk-gospel quintet Ollabelle teams up with jazz singer and mandolinist Catherine Russell to “re-imagine” songs from both American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead (another 1970 album from the Dead). The performance’s goal is not to re-create a Grateful Dead concert but to honor songs that have become mainstays in the American musical canon.

The American Beauty Project performs December 9, 7:30 p.m., at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort Event Center. Learn more online at americanbeautyproject.com. Buy tickets for the Hancher off-site event online at www.hancher.uiowa.edu or through the Hancher box office at 319-335-1160 or 1-800-HANCHER.
